Montessori Reflections: Movement! 🚶🌱

Does your child like to move? Likely, the answer is a resounding YES! 🙌 Especially as the weather is getting warmer and feels like spring outside 🌞🌸, you will notice your child having a hard time not moving! Maria Montessori promoted the revolutionary idea of movement being necessary for personality to form, believing that freedom of movement is essential for all children.

In the Montessori classroom, children have this freedom of movement as they choose their work from anywhere in the classroom 🏫 and where they will work: at a table (sitting or standing) 🪑, at a rug 🧘‍♂️, or even between two rugs! As a medically trained doctor ⚕️, Maria Montessori also spoke about how children needed to move with an intelligible purpose to connect their brain 🧠, body 🏃‍♀️, and senses 👀 throughout their daily activities—not just outside on the playground 🌳 or in a gym class. This means moving makes learning easier!

Movement is built into many of the activities in the Montessori classroom, such as walking to the shelf each time the child brings one pink cube 🟪 to their rug to build with.

With the weather getting nice ☀️, the children are naturally gravitating outside. As we get closer to a real spring and the plants start showing their green 🌿🌼, you will notice the children follow nature’s lead and will be ready to spring themselves into growth through moving their bodies!

💬 “Watching a child makes it obvious that the development of his mind comes through his movements.” - Dr. Maria Montessori
